Informal discussions on a common parliamentary agenda have commenced between the two main opposition parties that will hold the majority when the National Assembly reconvenes.

This is according to prime ministerial candidate of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Dr Rupert Roopnaraine.
“The discussion with the AFC (Alliance For Change) has not begun in earnest… but we are in touch,” he said on Friday. The APNU also is in the process of working out its legislative programme, Roopnaraine said. The APNU will then meet with the AFC to discuss the agenda, Roopnaraine added. Like the APNU, the AFC has similar legislative initiatives such as the establishment of the procurement commission, Roopnaraine shared.
Among the issues up for discussion is the selection of the speaker of the National Assembly. The speaker will have to come from the opposition since they hold the majority. History was made in Guyana when the Guyana Elections Commission revealed the results of the regional and general elections two days ago. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) won the presidency, but will be a minority government after securing 48.6 per cent of the vote with 166,340 votes and 32 seats. The APNU, the AFC and The United Force (TUF), the other contestants at the polls, won 40 percent, 10.3 per cent and 0.2 percent respectively.
The APNU captured 26 seats with 139, 678 votes, while the AFC won seven seats with 35,333 votes.
